Cracking Down On Gamerscore Cheats

Uh-oh. If you needed proof that cheats rarely prosper Major Nelson has just announced that Xbox LIVE users who violate the Xbox LIVE terms of use by tampering with or glitching their Gamerscore or Achievements will get their just desserts - and I don't mean apple crumble.

The following action will be taken against Xbox LIVE users proven to have consistently cheated on their Gamerscore:

Resetting the entire Gamerscore for an account to zero
The account will be unable to regain all previously obtained achievements and Gamerscore, however, the players will have the ability to gain future Achievements by earning them fairly, like the majority of the Xbox LIVE community does.
The account will be clearly labeled as a cheater for the community to view on xbox.com. You can see an example here. In dash, the personal view of the gamercard will be labeled as well.

Xbox takes any form of cheating over Xbox LIVE extremely seriously and is commited to dealing with it for the good of the wider Xbox community.

An FAQ has gone up on Xbox.com that describes more about the particular things you should NOT do if you want to avoid being branded a Gamerscore cheat, most notably:

Q: Under what circumstances does LIVE correct a specific gamerscore?
A: Specific and automated criteria are used to determine if a player has earned achievements by using tools that circumvent the game or avoid game play entirely. A player who meets these criteria has their gamerscore corrected.
Q: How does LIVE know a player has been cheating on their gamerscore versus another player?
A: We look for abnormal achievement and gamerscore activity using criteria that identifies users who have used external means to earn achievements without really playing the game. Users who play games legitimately to earn an achievements are unaffected by this.

So there you go - don't cheat your Gamerscore.

Back From Play.com Live

Just got back from London's Wembley Stadium (and no, I didn't nick the goalposts like my cabbie said I was going to!) where the Play.com Live event is being held this weekemd, and it was great! Big Xbox presence there, lots of Rock Band, and plenty of cool stuff to see and do.

We shot a lot of video for Inside Xbox so if you can't make it we'll take you on a tour later next week. I was also lucky enough to interview Iain Lee (proper nice bloke and massive Rainbow Six Vegas fan), some of the guys from Hollyoaks (although unfortunately not my favourite, Mercedes...), and then - get this - Christopher Biggins! Legend - he was good value, should raise a few chuckles...

But perhaps my favourite bit was when a nice bloke called Russell came up to me while I was standing waiting for our cameraman and said, "are you AceyBongos?" First time that's ever happened! Made my day! Thanks mate, was lovely meeting you and your girlfriend, and remind me of your GamerTag cause I've totally forgotten it!

World Cyber Games Day 3: Rockin' All Over the World

Another day at the World Cyber Games, another few thousand Europeans rocked! Had another amazing time today, this really is the coolest thing to be doing! Demoed more Rock Band, shot some more video, chatted with some of the World Cyber Games contestants, and got some voxpops from the attendees about how they liked . It's great hanging out with Trixie too, we never really get the chance to spend time together and we're having a proper laugh.

Video Monkey is working his socks off shooting, cutting and editing video (he was up until 4am last night doing the first batch and to make it worse we think his hotel room's haunted - there's a mysterious coughing and loogie-hawking sound coming from behind the wall, but there's not another room next to him. SPOOKY!) and we should have the first batch up today. I'll let you know if and when it goes.

And the videos we shot today are of people trying out Rock Band, then another one where Trixie interviews Handewasser, the reigning world PGR champion, and I talked to Grunt Dude, the best DoA4 player in the UK (and possibly Europe if he makes it to the final on Sunday).

World Cyber Games Day Two: Tonight, I'm a Rock and Roll Star

Well, that was one of the coolest experiences of my life! We were back at the World Cyber Games at Cebit today, shooting video for Inside Xbox and showing off Rock Band - and the cool thing is that right before the WCG opening ceremony me (vocals), TriXie (bass), Marathon Girl from the US PR team (drums, because girl drummers are officially cooler) and AlxAlxAlx from our Rock Band touring team got up on the big stage in front of about 200 people to perform two songs! Loved it loved it LOVED IT!

After some proper rock talk to the crowd ("Hello World Cyber Games! Are you ready to ROCK?") we opened with 'When You Were Young' by The Killers and then followed it up with 'Learn to Fly' by the Foos. We stunned the crowd into silence (), but we also five-starred both songs so I think we have a bright future ahead playing weddings, bar mitzvahs, funerals etc. Fortunately there were no record label A&R men there though, so I'm still working for Xbox. For the moment...

Video Monkey recorded the show so you'll be able to look forward (*cough*) to seeing that on Inside Xbox! We might look like tubes, but it was AMAZING fun! We also did some filimng of some of the cool stuff around Cebit today and the opening ceremony of the World Cyber Games itself, so look out for them too - I'll try to let you know when they go up. UK only, sorry.

Tomorrow I think we're going to shoot a proper in-depth look at all the cool gaming stuff that's going on around the World Cyber Games hall, including the public Rock Band stage and the Samsung Football Arena (lots of Chelsea going on there!). I think we're also going to catch up with some of the WCG contestants from the UK and some of the top stars from last year, should be cool. Can't wait to get back!

World Cyber Games - Day 1

Phew! That's my first day in Hannover, er, over, and it was great! Went over to the convention centre to case out the show and set some stuff up, and I reckon we'll have some really cool content coming over the next few days. We actually would have been shooting today but TriXie and Video Monkey couldn't fly into Hannover because the airport staff were on strike (!) so they had to get dropped off in Amsterdam and train it through. They weren't chuffed, as you can imagine...

Still, I took the opportunity to soak up some of the showfloor atmosphere and check out the World Cyber Games hall. We're one of the main sponsors of the event so there's lots of Xbox stuff going on, but the biggest draw is definitely Rock Band. It's the first time most Europeans have had the chance to see it in the flesh and try it out, and it's going down an absolute storm. We've got a really cool stage set up at our Xbox pods, and once a day one lucky band gets to show their stuff on the main stage in front of hundreds of punters! Quality. Of course, I made sure I had plenty of shots before I left. Funny how it started off quite busy when I started singing and by the time I left it was dead...

So I'm a bit excited today as I'm about to go off on an adventure to CeBit, the big German tech and computing show, and then onto the World Cyber Games 2008 Samsung Euro Championship! Xbox is a sponsor of the World Cyber Games so some of the best gamers in Europe will be showing off their skills on Dead or Alive 4 and Project Gotham Racing 4. And then there'll be me, mashing buttons and crashing into barriers.

The cool part of it all is that I'm meeting TriXie and Video Monkey from the US Xbox team and we're going to be shooting lots of video for Inside Xbox! Keep an eye out this week for updates direct from the show - and no doubt some proper tomfoolery too.

Right, I'm off to brush up on my PGR skills so I can take down some of these WCG guys...

GamerScore Blog Does Condemned 2...

If you're a shamed FBI agent with psychic powers and a sever dose of the heeby-jeebies, what's the logical next step? Go and work with the guys over at GamerScore Blog. Seriously. I spent some time with them recently and their office was at least as dark as some of the creepier sections in Condemned. And it did smell a bit like dead bird...

Anyway, the latest GamerScore video is a cracking comedy take on what would happen if Condemned 2's Ethan Thomas found himself working in Xbox HQ. Excellent work guys - all it needs is a dead body in a locker that JUMPS OUT AT YOU when you don't expect it.

And Condemned 2 is out on March 28. Given that the first game was one of my most memorable gaming experiences of the last few years I can't wait to get stuck into it.

XNA Community Games Download Extended, And Clarity on the Deal

GamerScore Blog brings news that the deadline for downloading the XNA community games has been downloaded until Wednesday morning at 8am. Now, I must confess that I didn't realise there was a time limit on the downloads, so here's clarity from John Porcaro from the GamerScore team:

"If you haven't already downloaded these games from Xbox LIVE, you have until Tuesday, Feb 26th Midnight PST to download them. You can play them until March 9th, midnight PST.

Whacha waiting for?

Clarification for everyone: These games are just a taste of what's to come this fall. Consider this kind of a limited-time "beta" of the real service. The games will essentially "expire" on March 9, and you won't be able to play them."

What's Happening With GDC?

It's Game Developers Conference week, and things are pretty busy round the Xbox office. I wanted to give you a quick idea of what to expect over the next few days.

The Game Developers Conference (or GDC) is a games industry event held in San Francisco. Xbox is there and we'll be keeping you up with all the news that comes out of the show.
If you're in the UK watch Inside Xbox for some quality video content over the next few days. First up is an interview Major Nelson recently did with John Schappert, Corporate Vice President of Xbox LIVE Services (which means he's the boss of LIVE). You can watch that now, and keep an eye out for more vids.

Halo Recut: Create Your Own Halo Movie and Win!

Upset that the proposed Halo movie is nowhere to be seen? Why not make your own? Halo Recut is a new competition Xbox is running which challenges you to create your very own Halo movie featuring Master Chief! The grand prize is a trip to study at film school in New York (please note that you actually need to be a student and be able to obtain a US Student Visa to claim this prize) and there's lots of other stuff up for grabs like Xbox 360 Elite consoles.

Halo: Recut competition gives fans across Europe the chance to show their creativity and love for Halo

25th January 2008 – Microsoft today announced the launch of a unique European competition looking for fans across the region to help create and show the unseen adventures of Master Chief. Whether its Master Chief’s “Meet the Parents”, a Spartan high school reunion, or even break dancing to MC Hammer, the “HALO: RECUT” contest is encouraging gamers and filmmakers alike to be as creative as possible, with the lucky winner scooping a once-in-a-lifetime masterclass trip to Los Angeles.

Microsoft is looking for innovative movie makers to construct their own original video of Master Chief, which sees him taken away from the Halo universe and remixed into different scenarios. Whether created using a traditional video camera, gaming footage, old school animation or the latest video editing software, the point is just to be creative.

To enter the competition participants simply have to visit www.xbox.com/halorecut/default.htm and upload their video from 31st January until 21st March 2008. The entries will then be judged by a panel of experts from the gaming industry to find the most creative concepts. One winner from each country will win themselves an Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system and a copy of Halo 3. Each country’s winning video will then be put through to the European final which will be judged by the creators of the game, Bungie Studios. The competition goes live from 25th January, 2008 and finishes on 21st March 2008
Entrants must be 18 years or older
Overall European winners will need to obtain a student visa from the American embassy to take part in the moviemaking course
All applicants must read the Terms and Conditions of the competition

Video can’t be bigger than 10MB. Need to be sent as a .wmv, .mpeg or .avi.
Video should last a maximum of 3 minutes

The headline says it all really - how cool would that be? The UK team are running a brilliant competition in conjunction with Activision and Odeon Cinemas where you and a mate have the chance to play CoD4 on a cinema screen.
